Every year, when New Year and Christmas customs fill streets, screens and shops, Muslims face the same question: how should a Muslim stand before a celebration that belongs to another religious world? The issue is not only a date on the calendar. It is identity, belief, imitation and the slow erosion of boundaries.
Some say it is only fun, only decoration, only atmosphere. But religious symbols do not become empty because we say so. A cross, a tree, a ritual greeting or a holiday language carries memory and meaning. The priest's words about crosses remind us that symbols teach even when people call them decoration.
Identity and loyalty
Al-Ma'idah 51 warns believers about loyalties that pull them away from their path. This does not mean injustice toward neighbors or colleagues. Islam commands justice and good manners. But justice is not dissolving one's faith inside another religion's celebration.
The hadith "whoever imitates a people is of them" is a serious warning. Imitation is not only clothing. It can be joy, calendar, greetings, symbols and habits that slowly make the heart comfortable with another identity.
Living Islam
Being named Muslim is not the same as living Islam. A name on an identity card does not replace prayer, modesty, loyalty, repentance and consciousness. The real question is not what people will say if we do not join, but what Allah sees in our choices.
Al-An'am 89, An-Naml 83, Al-An'am 62, Az-Zumar 47, As-Saffat 20 and Al-Anbiya 47 remind us of revelation, gathering, return to Allah, regret, judgment and precise scales. On that day, social pressure and decoration will not outweigh faith.
Repentance
This warning is not arrogance. It is a call to repentance and clarity. A Muslim can respect others without imitating worship, can be kind without confusing belief, and can live in society without losing the dignity of Islam.
